The Oxford Diocesan Board of Education (ODBE) has the largest number of schools and academies of any diocese in England, and it appoints nearly a thousand governors to these schools. The schools vary from small village primary schools to large urban secondary schools; there are voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools, together with academies – either standalone, or more recently, as part of multi-academy trusts. However, strong governance across all of these schools is needed to ensure they thrive.
ODBE has, over the past couple of years, considerably increased its capacity to support schools and now has a team of 12 education advisers, most of whom are former Headteachers. The team includes Ofsted and SIAMS inspectors, experienced chairs of governing bodies/IEBs and other officers offering a full range of support to schools and governors.
